There are forms of online communication such as instant messaging as well, but they do not allow for extended exchanges as easily or as elegantly as blogging can. Blogging truly has come a long way since its earliest incarnations as a sort of online diary or journal. Other blogs were utilized for more straightforward announcements and editorials, which was a common practice in the medical and industrial communities, as well as in the academe. The flow of communication back then was therefore limited towards the audience. Over time however, blogging has evolved into a platform in which both sides can participate almost equally in the discourse.
