In the corporate environment, administrators prefer to exercise control over the installation of a security patch rather than allow unlimited access to their networks for automated patch downloads. Administrators also prefer to delay patch applications until they have had the opportunity to test patch stability. Consumers are the primary recipients of automated security patch updates. The term "software regression" initially referred to software regression to its previously incorrect state following the application of a flawed security patch for an entirely different issue. In a perfect world, the software company regression tests a new security patch before releasing it.
